D. Laird Allan was born in Toronto in 1949 and grew up in Windsor, Ontario. In 1971 he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and went west to the training academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. From there he was stationed to British Columbia, where he spent 30 years. 29 of his 31 year career were spent in the traffic and collision reconstruction field. Over that span he photographed every conceivable type of motor vehicle collision, attending over 5000 collisions.
Nine years ago he started a small professional business on the side with his camera. After 31 years he decided to change careers and put his expertise to a more enjoyable style of photography. He successfully completed the New York Institute of Photography course. He is a people person and his favorite subjects are in fact people, especially kids. He uses a photo journalistic approach trying to capture the essence of the subject’s personality in a candid and spontaneous style.
Laird continues to gain experience and is trying to keep up with the ever expanding digital world, as well as staying in touch and using film. He has studied at the Image Explorations in Victoria, BC under the tutelage of Masters of Photography, Joseph and Louise Simone of Montreal, Quebec. He continues to follow his passion for life through the view finder in attempts to capture regular people living their lives. Carpe Diem and be safe.
